It’s Happening On The Hill

We Love Chaw! Since the open house about a year ago now we have been in love with the kind spirits and love for art that radiates from this place

“Skip the sugar and get an ART rush this year at
HILLoween @ CHAW!

You may think you’ve done HILLoween before–you’ve seen the crowds, collected the candy, participated in the costume contest. But have you gone trick-or-treating for art?

This year, we invite you, our CHAWsome friends, neighbors, students, and families of all ages, to join us for a ghoulish night of spooky art, taking place at CHAW from 5:30pm to 8:45pm on Halloween! There will be no shortage of FREE activities: we’ll be molding clay monsters in the gallery, making masks in the art studio, hosting a spooky classical piano recital in the dance studio, and providing plenty of fall treats in the form of donuts from our neighbors District Doughnut and local cider.

And the rest of 7th St. SE is in on the party! Grab a map from CHAW or our table at Eastern Market and go trick-or-treating for art. Get a stamp from our Alphabet Animal Artist table at Eastern Market, stop by and get a balloon hat at the Spider, take part in Spooky Science & Stories at the Public Library – SE Branch, learn the Thriller dance at the Grasshopper, and land at CHAW! Be creative with the order; just make sure you get all 5 stamps–and you’ll be entered to win a CHAWsome prize!

It might be crowded, but don’t miss out on Eastern Market, either. We’ll have a 3D printer demo at our table, not to mention a Suzuki violin performance at 6:15pm and the announcement of the name of our Grasshopper sculpture outside CHAW at 6:30pm.

After things wrap up at Eastern Market, make sure to swing back by CHAW for teaching artist Steven Schwarz’s Spooky Classical Piano Recital at 7:45pm. It’s classical music with a Halloween twist–fun for the whole family.

If you thought you’d seen it all in Eastern Market for Halloween, this is your year to break the mold–and break across Pennsylvania Ave. You make CHAW the creative community it is, so we wanted to take a moment to say THANKS…in true CHAW spirit, with lots of fun opportunities to make art and a few sweet treats. No tricks here–but costumes encouraged! Don’t forget to tweet your photos of the festivities to @CHAWinDC using #HILLoweenDC.

Hope to see you on Friday, 10/31, 5:30pm-8:45pm at CHAW for the best HILLoween yet!”

Free Family Day at Artisphere

Calling all families…spend an artful day at Artisphere’s free family day on November 2nd from noon until 3 p.m. This fun-filled event is centered around a dance party for kids, designed by the team from Baby Loves Disco. Have a frighteningly fun time with your favorite Looney Tunes characters as we screen some of their spookiest episodes including A Haunting We Will Go, Bewitched Bunny and more! Rounding out the event will be a mix of activities, including an art “make and take” project from Cuddles and Rage. What goes better with art than food?! Join Liz Reed of Cuddles and Rage and create your very own adorable cupcake and donut characters. Each treat will come to life as participants utilize various materials and mediums to give their art a 3D effect. Participants will learn about giving characters unique personalities through expressions and body positions. The lesson will also explore the use of different textures and color palettes.
Halloween costumes welcome, but not required! For the kid in everyone!IMG_3657.JPG

We Love…To Learn & Play

Kids are so wonderful and it’s so exciting to help nurture their little minds. In addition to some traditional items like flash cards and work books. I also incorporate learning with our daily activities…. Does your child enjoy helping you in the kitchen? If so use this as an opportunity to discuss the shapes your using in your recipie. Count up your ingredients and introduce measurements. We use blocks to create patterns. Take a walk with your little one and discuss the change of season. This is a wonderful time to introduce Chlorophyll to them. Perhaps they can even gather some leaves along the walk to make a craft later. Daily responsibilities with pets or household chores are also very empowering for little people to feel confident about their contributions to the family.

We love ordering from China and utilizing hands on learning tools 🙂
